Alaska Economic Trends December 2023: Aquaculture<\/h2><\/div>

In June of this year, Alaska was <\/span><\/span>deemed a federal Aquaculture Opportunity Area (AOA). <\/span><\/span>That means the state is environmentally, socially, <\/span><\/span>and economically able to support multiple commer<\/span><\/span>cial aquatic farming operations. According to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The Department of Labor and Workforce Development\u00a0 Economic Trends Report, Alaskan mariculture is blooming<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/article>

Federally funded project will search for rare earth elements in Southeast Alaska seaweed<\/h2><\/div>

Funded by the U.S Department of Energy, the University of Alaska Fairbanks is leading a project in “algal mining” as part of a broader push for domestic rare earth elements.<\/p>\n

The Southeast Alaska project will launch in March with collection and analysis of various types of seaweed near Prince of Wales Island. The project is trying to determine whether significant amounts of rare earth elements are being absorbed by that seaweed from Bokan Mountain, a site known to contain several of those minerals.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/article>

In order to grow the industry, Cordova\u2019s kelp farmers need a way to process seaweed locally.\u00a0 Growers are hoping seaweed can help bolster and diversify the region\u2019s economy. Local farmer says they\u2019re facing one big problem with growing their business: there\u2019s no reliable way to process seaweed in Cordova.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
