Mariculture Nerd Nite: A 19th-Century Naturalist Meets Alaska Seaweeds 🎨🌿 | Lindsay Olsen, GreenWave

Jul 7, 2026

Imagine seeing Alaska’s seaweeds for the very first time, from thick blades of bull kelp swaying in the current to vibrant pink coralline algae covering every nook and cranny of the rocky intertidal.

That’s exactly what happened when Russian expeditions arrived in the 19th century, and naturalist Aleksandr Postels got to work sketching the incredible algal life he observed. In our final Nerd Nite installation, GreenWave’s Lindsay Olsen explores Postel’s beautiful illustrations, how she stumbled upon them, and what they reveal about Alaska’s seaweeds then and now.
