Group seeks endangered species protection for West Coast bull kelp

On September 1, 2022, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a petition with the NOAA to have bull kelp (Nereocystis leutkeana) listed as an endangered or threatened species and to designate critical habitat concurrent with the listing. NOAA is currently conducting its 90-day review of the petition to evaluate whether further analysis of information about the status of the species is warranted.
